    Computing at Clandon

At Clandon, we believe computing is about much more than learning to use technology – it is about helping children become confident, curious and responsible digital citizens.  Our computing curriculum is carefully sequenced from Early Years through to Year 6 so that children build their knowledge and skills step by step, developing a secure understanding of how digital devices work, how information is created and shared, and how technology can be used creatively and safely.

From the very earliest years, children learn about sensible screen time, healthy habits around using devices, and how to stay safe online.  As they grow, this understanding deepens into a strong awareness of e-safety, including how to make safe choices, how to protect personal information, how to seek help if something doesn’t feel right, and how to behave kindly and responsibly when communicating online.

Children begin by exploring technology through play – using tablets, cameras and simple programmable toys – and learning the foundations of online safety.  As they move through the school, they learn how computers and networks work, how the internet helps people to communicate and collaborate, and how to think critically about the information they find online, understanding that not everything they see on the internet is true.

Alongside this, pupils use technology as a creative tool.  They design digital artwork, take and edit photographs, create animations, podcasts and videos, and eventually design their own web pages and 3D models.  Computing is also a place where children learn to think like problem-solvers: breaking problems down, giving clear instructions, spotting and fixing mistakes, and creating programs that use sequencing, repetition and selection.

Our approach supports children to become confident, capable learners who can use technology thoughtfully, safely and purposefully.  By the time they leave Clandon, pupils have a strong foundation in digital literacy, a healthy understanding of screen time and online safety, and the skills to use computing creatively and responsibly – preparing them well for secondary school and for life in an increasingly digital world.
