Our Writing Curriculum and Pedagogy
At our school, we believe that confident, creative writers are built on a secure understanding of the basics. Our writing progression is carefully designed to ensure that children develop strong foundations in spoken language, sentence construction and vocabulary before being asked to write at length. We prioritise depth over pace, allowing children the time they need to practise, revisit and truly understand what they are learning. This approach supports all learners, particularly those who need structure, reassurance and clarity to succeed.
From the very beginning, writing is rooted in talk. Oral rehearsal, storytelling and shared language experiences help children to shape and refine ideas before putting pen to paper. Teachers use high-quality texts to inspire writing across a wide range of genres, nurturing imagination while building knowledge of how language works. As children move through the school, they learn how to craft sentences with increasing control, organise their ideas clearly, and make thoughtful choices about vocabulary, structure and purpose.
Skilled teaching sits at the heart of our approach. Teachers model the writing process explicitly, talking through decisions, demonstrating strategies and showing children how writing can be improved through careful editing and revision. Support is gradually withdrawn as confidence grows, enabling children to become independent, reflective writers who take pride in their work. By the time they leave us, our pupils are equipped not only with strong technical skills, but also with a genuine sense of themselves as writers — capable, creative and confident in expressing their ideas.
