Mentoring at Newlands Federation
At Newlands Federation, we believe that relationships change lives. For some children, having a trusted adult outside the classroom can make a powerful difference to confidence, behaviour and self-belief.
Our mentoring programme provides selected children with the opportunity to work regularly with a trained volunteer mentor. These mentors are positive role models who give their time weekly to build strong, respectful relationships through shared activity, conversation and practical projects.
Mentoring sessions are purposeful and relationship-led. Activities may include:
-
Fixing, building and repairing around the school
-
Forest School and outdoor learning
-
Physical activity such as rugby skills or teamwork games
-
Talking about careers, interests and future aspirations
-
Learning practical life skills and problem-solving
Through these shared experiences, children develop:
-
Trust and positive attachment with an adult
-
Improved emotional regulation and behaviour
-
Confidence, resilience and self-esteem
-
A stronger sense of belonging and purpose
Mentoring is part of our relational, trauma-informed approach and complements the support children receive in class. It is not a reward or a punishment, but a carefully planned provision to help children thrive socially, emotionally and behaviourally.
