Forest School at Clandon
Forest School is a valued and distinctive part of life at Clandon. It provides children with regular opportunities to learn outdoors in a natural environment, enriching and bringing to life their classroom learning – particularly in science and geography.
Through Forest School, children develop curiosity about the natural world, learning to observe plants and animals in their habitats, notice seasonal change, explore materials, and develop early geographical skills such as following routes and using simple maps. Learning happens through hands-on experience, exploration and play, helping children to make sense of the world around them in meaningful ways.
Forest School sessions follow a consistent and reassuring structure, supporting children to feel calm, safe and ready to engage. Children are encouraged to become increasingly independent learners, following their own interests and developing confidence, resilience and teamwork through practical activities such as den building, tool use, fire lighting, habitat creation and problem-solving challenges.
Our trained adults support children as facilitators rather than directors of learning, helping children to take appropriate risks, develop independence and build self-belief. Children are involved in thinking about safety and learning how to balance risk and responsibility.
Forest School also plays an important role in developing children’s care for the environment. Children learn to respect the natural world, understand the importance of sustainability, and take responsibility for caring for the outdoor spaces they use.
Through Forest School, children grow in confidence, wellbeing and curiosity, developing practical skills and a love of learning that supports their wider development across the curriculum.
